The Process of Web Development

July 16th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

Introduction

The term ‘Web Design’ creates a lot of confusion and misunderstanding. The word design suggests graphics and layout so many people think that’s what designing a website is all about. Most people think that website design is very simple, all you need to do is install the company logo, add the relevant wording, decide on the arrangement of the pages and that’s it.

Well I am about to amaze you by outlining the many complicated processes involved in web design. Think of it this way; when an architect designs a house all we see is the way he lays out the rooms, how the available space is arranged. We normally do not concern ourselves with the amount of technical detail that goes into the design. The architect has to work out the stresses on the walls and the weight of the roof. If there are fireplaces he has to know about draughts and the shape of chimney for it to do the job. He has to plan heating systems, plumbing systems, drainage and sewage, what type of windows to use, door fittings and many other details so that when it’s finally complete the overall effect is pleasing and suitable for the purpose intended. Web design is similar. A customer may have an idea of the layout of the website but will need the services of the Web Designer to make it all happen.

Stages in the Process

There are many items to be decided on before even starting to build a website. Some of the important questions to consider are:

  • Who will be the target audience?
  •

  • What is to be the purpose of the website?
  •

  • Do you want it to be found by the search engines?
  •

  • What is the domain name for the site?
  •

  • What links need to be in place?
  •

  • What type of graphics do you want to use?
  •

  • Do you want to include photographs?
  •

  • Do you want a system of monitoring visitors to the website?
  •

Once the webmaster has the answers to these questions then he can start the process of designing the site to give you what you want.

    Target Audience

What sort of people are going to visit the new website? Are your customers likely to be businesses, sales people, home owners, parents, teenagers or children and so on?

    Objectives of the Website

Is the website to be used to sell products on line, or to market your business to get leads for new customers? Maybe you wanted it to be an online brochure to showcase your products. Balloons for trade have a website for resellers only so that they can look up the products before placing an order. Because there is no selling on line there are no contact details on the site. You may want to use the website to foster a community to be in contact with other likeminded people. You would need a design that incorporates a chat rooms and online discussions.

    Being found on the Web

The first step is a search of key words in the industry. Finding the best keywords is vital if you want to be in the top ten listed in Google. Every SEO or web designer will tell you this and it really is very very important. By using a keyword research tool you can find the single most popular (trophy) keyword; the one everyone puts in. For example people looking for a vacuum cleaner might type in Hoover although this is in fact a brand name. You will also need to research buying keywords, geographical variants and long tail keywords, these are keywords that are much more likely to convert into a sale but have lower search volumes, you can find out more information about these types of keywords by performing a web search.

    Domain Names

Domain names can be the hardest part of setting up your website, because nearly every name you come up with will most certainly have been taken already. By far the most popular are domain names ending in .com as they are internationally recognised. For that reason alone the majority of shorter names will already have been registered.
Choosing names with endings such as .net; .co.uk .org .info may provide you with the domain name of your preference. When choosing your domain name it is a good idea to include one or more of your keywords. Although the name of your business may be the obvious choice for a Domain Name, it is not necessarily the only option.

So as you can see choosing domain names and keywords right at the beginning of the process will determine how the site is constructed so that it is suitable for the purpose required.

A brand new domain name space has just been created.

Companies can now apply for their name in this brand new .tel name space and it is intended to replace the telephone directory. When the domain name is viewed in your web browser it will provide the companies details and telephone number.

    Creating a Site Map

It is very important to have a site map to outline the pages on your website, e-commerce website or forum space. It shows the design and flow through the website so that when selling on line, items work in order such as; adding product to basket, entering delivery and billing address and on to making credit card payment. The site map helps to identify how user friendly the website is so that there are no difficulties in getting onto the site. Often the user name and password are set for the customer so there is no hindrance to achieving the initial sale.

Non e-commerce sites are easier because it is possible to receive enquiries by email, without publishing the email address on the website. By using a contact form you will avoid junk mail and also validate the information before you receive it. The aim is to create a balance between discouraging junk mail, and making it easy for the enquirer to use the site.

    Links

An important consideration when designing a website are links. These can be links to other pages of content within your website, and links within the content of your website in the text, as well as links from the menu. Consideration has to be given to whether the links will open in a separate window so you still have your original page open or will the new window replace the previous one.

    The Copy

The copy is the words and visuals you want on your website. Having made decisions about the target market and relevant links, along with the keywords and using the site map information, the next step is to decide what imagery you want displayed. A picture speaks a thousand words and remains in people’s memory far longer than just words. So images are important to reach your audience. Each image needs a caption which is the ‘most read’ words on the page after the title. The caption of an image need to be clickable so that when you click on a picture it takes you to the next stage of the sales process.

    Design

The final design of the website is often the most challenging stage of the process because it’s subjective. In a large corporation, many people from various departments will have an input for their division. Everyone has their own ideas of what they think the site should look like and trying to gain a consensus can be a nightmare because nobody will ever agree.

If you are setting up a web design project just for yourself then you will probably have a clear idea of what you want to see on the site. But even then unless your ideas are workable in the medium, you may have difficulty getting something you like.

Modern CMS content management system driven websites are great because they enable you to quickly and easily update certain content sections without having to refer to your web designer. However, it is important that you have a clear idea in your mind of how you want your website to look and all the content for each page, before any design or build work is done. A CMS is great for editing a quick sentence but you want your designer to create the entire site with content before you start editing it.

Look at competitor’s websites in mind of your ideas to make sure your design will be an improvement on what is already in the market place.

Once you have done that you will need to create a design brief. The design brief should have a reference to the logo and any existing brand guidelines, colour schemes and fonts adding in any other relevant information.

Having done a design brief look for a suitable graphic designer. Choose your designer carefully, finding one who designs specifically for screen and the web to achieve the very best results. Beware of choosing a graphic designer who designs for different discipline such as print as they are very different processes. Look at other works the designer has done and decide whether or not you like their style.

Using multiple graphic designers is the best option if you are working in the big time and budget allows. Give each designer the same brief and request three concept designs from each one. The client might also do a design, even if it’s a scribble on the back of an envelope, there will then be ten concept designs. Get everyone together and choose the preferred elements from each design. Once the items you want are selected choose one graphic designer to do the final artwork.

All parties need to agree on the final artwork before construction of the site begins. Consideration should be give to the fonts used for the titles and buttons etc. Fonts have to be licensed so if the designer has not supplied something then the developer will need a copy of the fonts to achieve the task. Professional graphic designers will usually provide the artworks in a layered Photoshop file so if titles are not going to be in plain text get the designer to also supply the fonts.

    Production

At last all the ground work has been done and the site is ready to go into production. This is where it gets technical! You may not want to go into the detail in which case leave it to your Web Master to choose for you. There have to be decisions about what language to use, either Unix or Windows based, to build the website. Each have advantages and disadvantages with multiple variants but sites such as Ebay, Facebook, Google as well as other well known websites are built on Unix. Your website has to be built with the development language of your web host provider so that they are compatible.

    Accessiblity and Compliance

These are current standards for website coding to insure that disabled users, such as the visually impaired, can still access all sections of the website.

    Development

Development of the website is best done on the web server where the site will reside. Those involved in reviewing the work can then monitor work in progress and provide comments throughout the development.

    Unforeseen Items

As the site building gets under way the customer suddenly thinks of something they must have. No matter how well the web master prepares and asks the client the right questions, there are always some last minute adjustments to the programme. The main aim is to minimise last minute additions because they aren’t calculated in and will generate extra costs and cause delays to the date of the website going live.

    Going live

At last your site is up and running and you see the results of all the planning that has gone into the whole process. There is no substitute for real world testing so as soon as the site is live ask your friends and colleagues to view the website from their own computers and give feedback.

    Marketing

Once the site is up and running it’s time to turn your attention to promoting your products by submitting the site to the search engines, writing articles, and press releases and generating links from forums, blogs and other social networking spaces.

    Reporting and Monitoring

Many of the web design companies can install web stats on your website for you, enabling you to see which websites are sending you the most traffic (usually Google), what search terms users are finding your site under, what screen sizes they are using and loads of other even more valuable information.

Use a reliable statistics package such as Google Analytics or Web-Stat.com to collect and review website visitor data. All you will need is a small block of code inserted into each web page on your site to collect visitor information to help you assess the success of your products in near real time. Web-stat.com also monitors the website and alerts you by email and text message if the site goes down.

    Conclusion

The title ‘Web Design’ is a bit misleading in that people often assume it means the graphic design on the home page and the branding of the product. Unless you are a computer expert, most people do not realise the amount of work that goes into designing and building of a website. Clients are not aware of the amount of complex technical work necessary to build the systems that support what they want the website to do. In such a complex process anything that gets tacked on at the end will end up incurring more cost to your budget.

The depth of initial questioning is an indicator of how competent your Web Master will be. Every aspect of the construction has to be decided upon before you even start the design. These things may sound very technical to us non techies but it is essential for the Web Master to find out exactly what is required so that everything can be costed accurately and built into the design from the beginning.

4 ways to save money on your insurance

July 15th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

Never, never just accept a renewal quote from your existing provider on your Home and Car insurance cover. After mortgages, this is the easiest area to reduce your outgoings by requesting alternative insurers. According to the Daily Mail, On average you will save £214 by shopping around, while your home insurance premium tumbles from £368 to £227. The internet makes it incredibly simple to find quotes, and if you don’t spend at least one lunch hour a year finding a better deal then saving money is not important.

    1. Investigate your Loan protection insurance
Too expensive and agressively sold, Loan protection insurance is one of the most profitable products ever devised by the finance industry. It can add £3,000 to the cost of a £7,500 Personal loan. A vast proportion of people who were sold PPI are unable to claim against it these people are able to claim their ppi back.

Many companies will attempt to claim the money back, but you will pay a 25% premium on the monies awarded. Instead, call the FOS they are helping 4 out of 5 people missold . Helpfully, it offers a factsheet on how to make a complaint about PPI which you can find at financialombudsman.org.uk

    2. Cancel your mobile phone insurance
Many people are strongly pressured in phone shops into spending between £60 and £70 a year on this kind of insurance. Most policies don’t cover you for the most dangerous type of risk airtime abuse (if the phone is used to ring abroad), and if you lose your phone you can always claim for it under your home contents cover for personal belongings.

Just ring your bank, stop the direct debit and job done!.

    3. Rethink your life insurance
You can also cancel your life insurance. Just because the life cover was sold to you by the provider of your mortgage doesn’t mean you have to stick with that provider for the life of the remortgage. You have the option to cancel at any time to get a cheaper deal. With longevity improving (ie. fewer people dying), life insurance providers have been reducing premiums for a log time.

If you are in a job at a big employer, it is likely to offer “death in service” benefit worth at least three times your annual salary, and often a lot more. Do you really need all that life insurance cover on top as well?

    4. Don’t pay for travel insurance you don’t need
Step 1 An EHIC card provides free or reduced cost treatment in EU countries

Step 2 Check your home insurance policy. most cover your belongings ouside your house.

Step 3 Check your medical insurance policy, if you have one. These usually pay treatment costs incurred abroad. For most holidaymakers, who travel to southern Europe once a year, the only real benefit that travel insurance brings is cancellation cover. Is that worth the premiums.

If traveling outside the EU you must have travel isnurance Policies that last for a year and cover you for more than one trip always make sense if you go away more than once a year though again don’t pay for cover you don’t need. E.g., if you don’t ski or snowboard, you don’t need winter sports cover.

The Oldest Surviving Carpet in the World

July 13th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

The art of Persian Oriental rug weaving has been around for centuries. Carpet weaving is an essential part of Persian art and culture and dates back to ancient Persia. Over time this art underwent many changes, but the principles and level of quality remained the same.

Wool is the most common material used for carpets, but oftentimes silk would be used to weave these precious oriental rugs. Silk carpets date back to the sixteenth century of oriental carpet weaving. Silk is more expensive, and less durable, but the value does tend to increase with age.

Unfortunately, over the passage of time, materials such as wool, cotton and silk start to decay. This leaves hardly any remnants for archaeologists wanting to research the history of Persian rugs and carpets.

In a very beneficial archeological discovery in 1949, the oldest Persian carpet in the world was found. The carpet was found in the grave of a Scythian prince amongst the ices of the Pazyryk valley in Siberia. It is thought that perhaps the ice from the mountains preserved the carpet, which has been dated through radiocarbon testing as being woven in the 5th Century BC.

The Pazyryk carpet is 283 by 200cm in size and has 36 symmetrical knots per cm squared. This oriental carpet indicates a long history of evolution of this art, because of the advanced weaving technique that can be matched up to the technique of latter centuries. The Pazyryk carpet is considered to be the oldest carpet in the world.

Expert Web Marketing & Design Tips

July 12th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

Your website is where your business resides - it’s like the headquarters of an offline company. Hence, it is important to practice good web design principles to make sure your site reaches out to the maximum number of visitors and sells to as many people as possible. Following are some tips from a web marketing expert and professional designer from a Prescott web design firm:

Make sure you have clear and simple navigation for your site. The navigation menu should be uncluttered and concise so that visitors know how to get around your website without confusion.

Make sure your web site design complies with web standards at www.w3.org and make sure they are cross-browser compatible. If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox, or even in Safari, you will lose out on a lot of prospective customers.

Reduce the number of images on your website, particularly non-relevant images. They can make your site load more slowly and often are unnecessary. If you think an image is essential, make sure to optimize it for a minimum file size.

Avoid using scripting languages on your site unless absolutely necessary. These are best for handling or manipulating data, rather than creating visual effects on your site. Some scripts will slow down the loading time of your site and even cause some browsers to crash.

Another suggestion is to use CSS to style your content. This will save a lot of work by styling all elements on your website at once.

    Vinyl Siding: Built to Last

July 12th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

Vinyl siding is a flexible material that is used for exterior wall covering of your home. Manufactured primarily from polyvinyl chloride, it is an engineered product which is highly resistant to heat, cold and moisture, making it a strong product for the outside of your home.

Putting money into exterior siding makes good sense.Savings-wise, you will get a huge return of investment when vinyl siding is used in re-tooling a dilapidated appearance. Vinyl siding needs zero maintenance. Couldn’t we all use a few extra ours during our day? Vinyl siding provides homeowners many advantages: not only are there many color and stylistic choices, it is also a great way to enhance the aesthetic value of your house.

Adding house siding to your home can be much more expensive than repainting. If you have found that adding vinyl siding to your home is cost prohibitive, you might consider repainting, which is much more inexpensive. Is the extra expense worth it? Here are some considerations.

Repainting every 4 years would be expensive, can you imagine how much that would add up to over the next 15-20 years? That’s a reasonable lifespan for a quality certified vinyl siding job.

What can be the amount of time saved in maintenance if you do not have to scrape, paint or replace rotting boards? The ease of cleaning and maintaining vinyl siding is as simple as spraying with a garden hose and using a mild detergent.

If the construction is durable, the vinyl siding will resist any dent or damage against hail or rough weather.

You can take your pick from an assortment of colors, styles and textures to create your own look and feel.

    What are key features?

If you can find certification by the Vinyl Siding Institute, then you know you are getting a quality product. The industry boasts a special standard called VSI certification which ensures the siding meets or exceeds preset conditions.

Let us know what your options are

    Gauge

The weather resistance and the impact is better if the panel is thicker. As the panels are thick, they will hang straighter and will be flat against walls to give a better apperance. Look for the correct gauge size which is more inexpensive.the premium is 040″.

    Grain

Smooth grains give a more traditional or contemporary look. More pronounced grains can give a home a more rustic appearance.

    Profiles

Do you like a traditional clapboard style? A dutchlap panel? Have you ever heard of a vinyl siding called dutchlap panel? What about a beaded panel and its old-fashioned look? Look over the different profiles that are available, and see how these can change the look of your home.

    Color Choices

Choose from a wide variety of colors, that stone siding will hold better and longer than paint.

Designing A Web Site For A Specific Screen Resolution is Over

July 11th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

    Introduction

What screen resolution should you build a website at?

I was reading somewhere recently that apparently these days the only answer to that question should be ‘all of them’ and ‘none of them’. What this basically means is that new websites should be built to accommodate all different screen sizes these days, particularly with the increased popularity of hand help web browsers, smart phones, net books and the like. Of course there is also the other end of the spectrum in the new huge wide screen flat screen monitors. I recently treated myself to a 24 inch Asus which does 1920×1080 which is big enough to get two web browser windows on screen side by side, but if you make one of them full size, the majority or websites look, well, just plain silly!

What exactly is screen resolution then?

If you are not familiar with screen resolution, the simple answer is that it is the size of your desktop. However, this can be quite misleading because it is actually the number of pixels that make up the display area on the screen of your monitor. Still not clear? Well let’s look at some examples to help clarify exactly what screen resolution is.

Currently what would appear to be the most favourite screen resolution is 1024×768 (accounting for 62% of my website visitors). This is a screen that is 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high. What is a pixel? A Pixel, derived from the phrase Picture Element, is basically one of the thousands of tiny dots that make up your display screen. However, this does not necessarily determine the physical size of your monitor (14 inch, 15 inch, 19 inch etc) because most monitors are capable of displaying the screen in different screen resolutions. It is fairly true to say that if you want to run your monitor at a high screen resolution then you will need a large monitor, the larger the monitor the greater the resolution it can display at (assuming your graphics card can support a high resolution).

All getting a bit technical? Put simply the larger the screen resolution the more things you can fit on your screen before they have to go onto the next line, or before you have to scroll down or scroll right.

What’s this got to do with Website Design?

When creating the layouts for a new website design, traditionally the experienced graphic designer would be working to a specific resolution in order to make sure that the design fits in your browser window without having to scroll right. (Thankfully most website owners don’t demand you make their pages so that you don’t have to scroll down anymore!)

Web design today should be fluid rather than being fixed at a specific screen resolution so an experienced web design company really ought to be offering you this option.

When designing at a fixed resolution you can deal with larger display settings by either aligning the site to the left and having a huge great big gap to the right, or you can centre align the website in the available space and then the extra screen resolution will be on either side of the content area.

However, the sensible, modern day approach is to make the site flexible to allow for all screen resolutions by creating ‘fluid’ content that will flow to fit the available page space irrespective of what size screen resolution it is viewed at.

Also, because of the increased competitiveness of the web the challenge for a website owner is how to engage your viewers and get them to stay on your website for as long as possible and show them as much content as possible. One way to help with this is to make full use of all of the available space. Two great big blank areas either side of a tiny web page is simply just a waste of space. Imagine if you picked up a newspaper or magazine and only half of the front page had got any content on it, the editor would get the sack for sure! So by creating fluid content, web site owners can take advantage of larger publishing spaces available on bigger screen users, whilst optimising content for display on smaller screens too.

Another advantage with big screen displays is the ability to use the new area for re-publishing. Re-publishing is a way to put content from another area of your site onto a different page, thereby bringing it forward for the viewer. An example of this that we did on one site we created was to insert an alphabetical list of names of the products available on the website below the left hand menu on pages that were very long.

All pages tend to be different lengths, as determined by the content on the page, so we used a clever widget to create this list of product names and insert it in the gap until it ran out of space. This was great for SEO too as it gave a direct link to specific product pages based on their product names without having to crawl through category pages first, also website users would often see something in the list they wanted and click straight through to the page and buy the item.

Ultimately this has evolved into what would now be thought of as a web 2.0 ‘tag cloud’ a list of tags that are usually user generated, to indicate and link directly to a specific content group or item. Using a tag cloud is a great way to fill stretched spaces on larger screens that you can fill with what are effectively links to other parts of the website.

How do you make fluid content?

Fluid content is not that hard to create, the majority will be words of course, which are naturally fluid so on a small resolution screen you might get 5-10 words to a row, on a larger screen you can get 20-30 words or more. However the challenge comes with images, and particularly website graphics. A photograph, whilst it can be made smaller and larger offline, it can’t be automatically resized by the web browser at the time of viewing (not taking into account the Zoom function in Internet Explorer).

The HTML code that makes up your web pages is again designed to allow fluidity by fitting content into the available page area, so some tips that can be employed to make content fluid include not using tables in the code (which are depreciated these days now anyway), not setting specific screen width in pixels, use 100% instead. By fading images into blocks of colour in the website graphics, you can create a stretchable element that will scale to fit all window sizes. Use little boxes to put stuff in, these can then flow around the screen as required without having to be in any particular place, they also help to draw the eye to special offers, discounts, newsletter sign ups etc, and can of course be styled by your graphic designer with curves and shading and gradients to look great.

    Conclusion

Only the best Loughborough web design companies are able to offer a fluid design that will work at all screen resolutions and fill the entire screen with content on larger monitors, and provide a design that also works at smaller resolutions on smart phones and netbooks. Ensure then that your design agency are conversant in this design concept, if they are not familiar with it, walk away!

How a works council messed up a speech and became europes number 1 repercussiveness coach

July 10th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

The art of speaking also known as rhetorik is not always an easy task to master. One man had to learn this the hard way. A former works council in a german company was requested to hold a speech at a festivity and messed up terribly. His speech was so worse that lots of people left the room, others looked ashamed away and some of them hissed him. He then left the room and was deeply in shame. After that day he promised himself never to be in a situation like that again. And he was determined to learn all about rhetoric he could. He visited every rhetorik seminar he could and spent thousands of euros finding the best techniques. He learned under nearly every teacher there is and found that lots of the teachings were contrary.

Eventually the student asked a lot of questions and finally he developed his own style of rhetoric and his own rhetoric tutorials (rhetorik uebungen). He took every method and tried and tested it so he could develop a feeling for it and its effeciency. So this person came up with a modern set of rules for rhetoric and a unique style of presenting. Which the most important milestone is without a doubt the abandonment of powerpoint. His teachings and trainings are most remarkably and now this man is well-known in europe for his unique approach. He is also about to start a campaign against powerpoint and to forbid it by law for use in company presentations. More on that in a future post.

With all the set rules that traditional speakers tell one who studies rhetoric this one man is an exception. Although he teaches some rules and guidelines he has also developed an approach to test every method for its viability to delight the masses. Celebrities come to his trainings and book exclusive coachings. He beats every powerpoint presentation with his way of presenting hands down and teaches everyone who is willing to listen the way how to do it. He recently improved a mailing which converted at 0,4% to a conversion rate of 15%! Who is that man, who makes that possible and is a seeked-out rhetoric guru? Who is that man who rised from zero to hero in the world of rhetoric? The answer: Matthias Poehm. A man, who has proven that everybody can succeed with speech. Welcome to Poehm Seminarfactory. Callaway Warbird Golf Bag Review

July 10th, 2009 by Allknowing in Uncategorized

One of the most highly recommended Callaway bags is the Warbird hot stand bag. This lightweight bag comes in at a total empty weight of 6.3 lbs and a full range of top features. The top cover is full 9 inches to provide easy access to the clubs that are effectively separated by full length dividers to give you tangle-free operation 100% of the time. The latest Xtra traction technology ensures you have optimum stability once the bag is fully loaded and in use, and users have found, once in a standing position, the bag won’t move until you move it. In order to ease the burden on your back, this Callaway bag comes with front-carry handles and trunk handles, which make lugging this bag around easy. The padded straps will deliver a comfortable transfer with minimal strain.

The Callaway Warbird bag comes with 6 zippered pockets to ensure you never run out of space for all of today’s modern golfing gadgets. Inside you’ll find the small number of velour-lined accessory pockets for those precious valuables, in order to prevent scratching and damage. No self-respecting golfer would start without access to fluids, and now with the Warbird’s in built cooler pocket your beverage will be kept nice and cool. The magnetic pockets guarantee ‘no losses’ during play and the rain hood and umbrella holder deliver dry clubs irrespective of the weather.

Current users of this Callaway bag rave about the amazing amount of space and the versatility of the bag under all conditions. Standing is never a problem and the light weight means that you’ll have no problems shouldering a steady walk for 18. As you’d expect with the Callaway brand, this bag is tough and will easily survive the odd knock and even the regular drag around the course. Most users I’ve spoken to are more than happy with this dependable and feature rich purchase, and highly recommend this bag over more expensive bags from other manufacturers.
